Project Beach House

Project Beach House

SUNSHINE COAST, QLD, AUSTRALIA―My current project is sourcing furniture for a beach home on the Sunshine Coast, which will also be used as a rental property.

The area is one of the most beautiful on the Sunshine Coast (perhaps I’m biased!) and the owners were fortunate to find a substantial block with sea views. An old fibro cottage had to be knocked down to make way for a modern, sleek design taking full advantage of the enviable views.

The house design incorporates lots of glass and the home is lovely and light. I’m keeping the overall scheme simple and neutral to tie in with the tiles and timber already selected. I’m also limiting personal touches as the clients will not be living in the home but using it more for investment purposes. They therefore have no sentimental attachment to the furnishings and want a stylish, beachy feel without being over the top or clichéd.

Part of the client brief was also to stick to a budget so I’m very aware of this when selecting durable, understated furnishings and accessories that are easy to live while withstanding wear and tear. I’m also sourcing furniture that can be easily moved should more seating be required for meals or entertaining.

I plan to bring in different tones and textures to create inviting spaces. The neutral tones will blend well with the VJ (grooved) walls and ceilings and the antique white walls.

Some of the electrical points were awkward for the placement of furniture and art so I’ve had to liaise with the builder, electrician and owners to potentially move them.

I was fortunate to find some stunning pendant lights from a homeware shop conveniently close by which will be perfect for above the kitchen bench-top.

While the furnishings and fittings are important, the ocean view is the real hero of the home. Artwork I select has to make a statement without competing with the spectacular outlook.

I’m currently doing layouts of all the rooms, showing floor space with furniture positions. This allows the client to visualise the end result and get an idea of space and options.

As a visual person, I prefer to provide furniture to scale and create a story board so clients can see alternatives for moving furniture. I look forward to sharing more as the build progresses …
